Sweet Delicious Honey

We were fortunate enough to be asked to do a maternity shoot this past weekend, the best part being that it was to take place up north in Santa Maria at Ernie & Tanya’s home. Not only were we looking forward to seeing them, but the idea of a short road trip after months of hectic running around sounded more than appealing. With cameras and gear in tow, we set out for Santa Maria with a very gloomy looking morning, we were hoping would pass. One hundred seventy miles and one missed exit later, we arrived, with the day still looking a bit gray. Regardless we decided to set out for our location, Avila Beach, and were met with a small break in the clouds with the sun shinning right through, creating the perfect amount of light. We snapped away taking advantage in our momentary gift of light, and managed to have some fun on the beach. Packing up we set out in search of dinner but ended up stopping at Avila Valley Barn.

Avila Barn TomatoesWe had passed the place on the way to the beach and were eager to see it, but we weren’t expecting to have our senses so completely inundated by autumn all at once. The colors everywhere almost overwhelming, with fresh fruit and vegetables of every imaginable size and color. Avocados the size of a baby’s head. We were in organic food heaven. Not to mention the nostalgically packaged jars of honey and preserves everywhere. Then there were the smells that surrounded us that really did make you feel like you were in the middle of October. Needless to say, we didn’t waste any time in taking some extra pictures for the maternity shoot. After all, who wouldn’t take advantage of such a great location? While we were at it, we even ended up having our picture taken. Unfortunately by the time we had arrived the tractor rides had ended, and the shop was starting to close up, which didn’t bother us too much since we were all starting to get as hungry as a full day of shooting will get you. So, promising the petting zoo goats and sunflowers that we would be back soon to pet them, we headed for some much anticipated eating. All in all, it was a much needed temporary departure from life in the city.
